Holiday at Home

Holiday at Home

Holiday at Home is specifically for older folk in the Upton area. It was started with the idea that if people were unable to go away on holiday they could still have a 'holiday' while staying at home. So we aim to provide a fun and interesting week, with good food and friendly company.

Our Holiday at Home events in 2015 began with Songs of Praise in March when about 40 people attended, including helpers. Several people chose hymns that were special to them and we heard the reasons for their choice. We finished with the ever-popular cream tea.

Holiday at Home in August comprised of two full days and two half days, where between 20 and 35 people, plus helpers, gathered for a varied programme and good food. We learned about the work of Mercy Ships, a hospital ship which treats people in parts of the world where there are no facilities for performing even routine operations. One afternoon we 'went on a trip' to Spain. Richard entertained us by telling stories in a most dramatic way and had us joining in with the sound effects (those of us who weren't laughing too much!). Thursday saw a visit from the Upton Police Safe Neighbourhood Team, with advice on keeping safe and insights into the daily routine of a policeman in Upton. Friday afternoon we had a concert with Linktop Recorders, when some of us heard recorders played as never before, and the Colwall Community Choir who entertained us magnificently with a varied programme and a sing-a-long. We concluded with the traditional cream tea. In-between these activities there were the usual quizzes, table games and jigsaws. Each day we had a 'thought for the day' brought to us by our Minister, Paul McCabe, focussing our attention on a different aspect of our Christian faith.

We will be holding a Christmas Carol Songs of Praise followed by light refreshments on Wednesday 2nd December 2.30 - 4.30pm.

There is no charge for Holiday at Home events but donations are welcome to help us cover the cost. Attendance is by invitation so that we know how many we are catering for at meal-times. We can also provide transport if needed. If you have not been before and would like to come, or if you know someone who you think would like to come, please contact the church office (email or phone 594991) or phone me on 01531 632851
