The development of our Grade II listed chapel and attached community rooms signifies a significant milestone for our community, marked by a history that stretches back over 375 years. This enduring legacy serves as a foundation for the exciting opportunities that lie ahead, as we embark on a journey to transform this currently unusable historic space into a beacon of warmth, accessibility, and creativity.
The Chapel Redevelopment will include a Historical Interpretation Project. Upton Baptist Church has one of the oldest Baptist Chapel buildings in the UK in continuous use, since 1734. The aim of the Project is, first, to find attractive ways of interpreting that history and bringing it to life, and, second, to engage with the local community to place the story of the Chapel in the wider context of the history of the town.
Our historical Consultant who will work with us on this is the Revd Dr Karen Smith, a church historian living locally who has written extensively on the history of English Baptists, specialising in the 18th century. Dr Smith is Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the School of History, Archaeology and Religion of Cardiff University.

"I am delighted to support this project that will make the Baptist Church even more effective as a centre and resource for the whole community of Upton upon Severn."
Our vision for The Wellspring goes beyond construction – it is testament to our commitment to involving the local community in creating a welcoming and adaptable environment that embraces the diversity and creativity and that is concerned with the social, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing of all people. By ensuring that the venue caters to the changing needs of future generations, we aim to establish a hub of wholeness that resonates with all.
The Wellspring will provide a quiet and reflective space for contemplation, alongside opportunities to explore creativity. Through strategic partnerships with festivals and a dedicated focus on showcasing the talents of local artists, we seek to cultivate a space that inspires and educates, making the arts more accessible, fostering a sense of belonging and connection among residents. We also will strengthen opportunities for community groups, young people, older persons, and support groups.
By creating a space that encourages collaboration and inclusivity, we hope to secure a legacy that will be cherished by generations to come.
"The church works closely with Upton upon Severn C of E Primary School children and their families providing countless essential services and fantastic opportunities. Expanding these will be of real benefit to people in Upton!"
The chapel building will undergo a comprehensive renovation, with the exterior rerendered and the interior lime plastered. Pews will be reduced to create space, exposing the baptistry. A raised platform will be added and the listed organ restored. Heating, lighting, and an enlarged foyer with a new glass partition will be included. The kitchen will be extended to meet increasing demand, and the toilets will be reconfigured and expanded.
"I am excited to see this happen! Having a venue that can increase participation and foster a sense of community right in the heart of town will be a great asset for Upton."
