Church History

The Chapel Redevelopment will include a Historical Interpretation Project. Upton Baptist Church has one of the oldest Baptist Chapel buildings in the UK in continuous use, since 1734. The aim of the Project is, first, to find attractive ways of interpreting that history and bringing it to life, and, second, to engage with the local community to place the story of the Chapel in the wider context of the history of the town.

Our historical Consultant who will work with us on this is the Revd Dr Karen Smith, a church historian living locally who has written extensively on the history of English Baptists, specialising in the 18th century. Dr Smith is Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the School of History, Archaeology and Religion of Cardiff University.
